bedMATE du mois #25 : Bernadette Anvers
Every month we visit a creative and inspiring person. She or he is the 'bedMATE of the month'.
The bedMATE is the most iconic item in our collection. The extra long pillow serves as a headboard, but also as a cuddle buddy, a friend who gives support.
We crawl into bed with the 'bedMATE of the month'. We take a look at their homes and their colorful (bed)rooms. In conversation we discover how they experience the SUITE life.
This month we visited Bernadette and Charlotte, together with all-round creative Nicole Huisman, in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods of Antwerp.
BERNADETTE is the Antwerp fashion label of the creative mother-and-daughter duo Bernadette and Charlotte de Geyter.
BERNADETTE was founded five years ago in December. "We wanted to tell a personal story about our friendship and at the same time share our intergenerational vision on fashion."
Tell us something about your current collection?
Our current summer collection was born from a need for fun and we want to offer that to our customers. The collection contains nostalgic prints such as vichy, as well as hand-drawn prints such as violets, wisteria and forget-me-nots. It is a very playful collection that can be styled in many ways, often combined with one of our rose brooches.
"When we first started and were in the Net-a-Porter offices for the first time, just before we had to go in I noticed a small printing error on the dress my mother was wearing. I quickly texted my mother to hide it. It's really funny to think back on that."
Bernadette's home breathes creativity - can you tell us something about the
creation of this facility?
"My mother has a lot of fun decorating her home, she has a great sense of humor and lots of fearless, colorful, creative ideas. The decor of her home reflects this perfectly."
Your houses are both very different, can you talk about the differences in this?
Charlotte: "My mother has a lot of little things that have a memory for her. I myself sometimes prefer a less is more approach, although I also have my corners!" Both houses were renovated by the Belgian architect Matthias Steen.
Your biggest work dream?
"Runway set ups like Karl Lagerfeld did at Chanel. Beautiful and gigantic
set-ups that were built each season in Le Grand Palais in Paris."
Favorite Bernadette print ever?
Hard to say, it changes every day! I've always loved daisies, and
A few years ago we printed a whole 'Daisy field' on a very wide cotton dress with a green base. A few months later a customer sent a picture of Gwyneth Paltrow in the dress. This remains one of my favorite prints for several reasons.
How did the homewear collection come about?
Our homewear collection was born during COVID, it was the first time since the start of our brand that we could pause. We had an archive of prints and wanted to reuse them in an innovative way. It was the perfect moment, with a lot of time at home, where you could enjoy extra comfort items in your home.
“We couldn't imagine life without our homeware, it has become an important part of the brand.”
Bernadette chose the butter yellow set, all the way, of fitted sheets
to bedMATE – what is the thinking behind this?
“It feels very summery and fresh, like you could fall into a butter dish after a long day and not get out.”
"I often draw pictures on my iPad in bed, and the bedMATE is ideal to put behind me so that I can sit up straight."

What's still on your interior wishlist?
"A lot of art, in an ideal world a work by Rose Wylie."
